The death of Pope Francis set in motion one of the most significant religious events of recent years: the 2025 papal election. As this rare and closely watched global event unfolded, one question naturally emerged: Can we predict who the next Pope will be?
The papal election is not only a religious milestone but also a global media phenomenon. Trendency's Data Science team set out to explore how international media attention shifted among the cardinal electors throughout the election process.
To do this, we combined our vector database-powered media monitoring platform with Google Trends data to identify the cardinals receiving the greatest media attention and reveal the leading contenders—as well as national favorites—through the lens of data. And, of course, no analysis in 2025 would be complete without generative AI, which helped us compile the report and summarize articles specifically covering the papal election.
